Government announces package to aid cancer treatment in the regions

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Sunday the Government would fund the replacement of half of all the country's radiation machines, with 12 linear accelerator (LINAC) machines to be purchased over the next three years.

The replacement LINACs will mean cancer sufferers in Hawke's Bay, Northland and Taranaki won't have to travel to a larger centre for treatment.

The Cancer Society said the announcement was a positive step to addressing the postcode lottery in cancer-care.

"While infrastructure is only one part of the cancer programme, it's great to see the machines going where they are needed the most. These will reduce wait times and improve outcomes for people needing treatment," medical director Dr Chris Jackson said.

There had been expert consultation and sector engagement prior to the announcement, he said.

"We're eagerly awaiting the full plan as we work towards better cancer outcomes for all New Zealanders."
